Xue Penghui, a member of the Chinese rescue team, said.MANDALAY, Myanmar, April 1 (Xinhua) -- "Do you know what Daddy is going to do?""To save lives!""Do you know where Daddy is going?""Myanmar."The conversation was between a Chinese rescuer Cui Feile and his child ahead of his departure for quake-rattled Myanmar on March 29.The China Search and Rescue Team, assigned by China's Ministry of Emergency Management, arrived in hard-hit Mandalay in Myanmar at around 17:00 local time on Sunday. (Photo by Myo Kyaw Soe/Xinhua)Due to the fact that the surrounding airports were not equipped for large passenger planes to land or take off, the team had to travel to Mandalay from Yangon, their first stop in Myanmar, on road.The more than 600 kilometers between Yangon and the epicenter of the earthquake, Mandalay, took them nearly one day.Road blockage, signal disruption, among other setbacks, entangled the team's footsteps, as about 300 kilometers of the journey from the capital Nay Pyi Taw took 10 hours.Qu Minhao and his teammates, even on this not-so-joyful trip, spare no time to analyze building structures that might have survivors at each site in Mandalay one by one.They planned the support programs and determined the rescue equipment in advance to ensure that upon the arrival at the sites, they would rush into the operation, wasting no time.Members from the China Search and Rescue Team and the Rescue Team of Ramunion jointly transfer a pregnant survivor at a quake site in Mandalay city, Myanmar, March 31, 2025. Debris and rubble were everywhere, with temples collapsing, schools damaged and cracks on high-rise buildings. Many locals were seen sitting alongside roads waiting for transfer vehicles.Night was approaching when they arrived, so the rescue team quickly sent a 16-member team to quake scenes to investigate.The Great Wall Hotel, a seven-storey building, collapsed from the second floor. Steel bars and pipes flared out like fangs, trapping some people.From 7:30 p.m. local time on March 30, the team, joined by other rescuers, kept working at the hotel site.Roughly five hours later, from the depths of a crack came the good news, "Coming out. Female. Still alive!" A woman who had been trapped for more than 60 hours was successfully rescued.At another site of the Sky Villa residence in Mandalay, a group of China Search and Rescue Team was seen operating intensively.When the earthquake struck, a family member of a trapped person was out of town. On the phone, his five-year-old son called out for help in fear, "Dad, come and save me ..." The phone call came to an abrupt end, which was not a relief sign for the father. At the ruins of Sky Villa, he anxiously spoke with Xue Penghui, a member of the Chinese rescue team."Hearing his cry for help, I have mixed feelings. (Photo by Myo Kyaw Soe/Xinhua)The team followed the feedback sound vertically down to break down, accurately found a girl, instead of the above-mentioned boy, and a pregnant survivor under the rubble. The rescuers used heavy machinery plus ropes to transfer the two people smoothly.In a separate case at the Sky Villa site, a little girl and her 29-year-old sister were both trapped between floors. The girl climbed out of the debris, thanks to her small size, and came across the Chinese rescue team members.Despite the injuries she sustained while crawling, she climbed back to her sister's position with the team's radio handset, helping rescuers to confirm that her sister was alive.Rescuers quickly broke down the blocks and opened up a pathway to life, through which, the elder sister successfully climbed out of the rubble. The duo was seen embracing each other tightly.After the battle, the Chinese team was exhausted. Working in the heat of 40 degrees Celsius with full equipment, the rescuers themselves were at risk of heatstroke at any time.The five-year-old boy had not yet been found and Xue Penghui, the Chinese rescuer, chose not to give up. He and his teammates returned to the makeshift camp, replenished energy, took a break, and were ready to go on their mission.
